What is UIDAI?
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is a statutory authority established under the provisions of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016.
UIDAI is responsible for the implementation of the Aadhaar project — India's unique biometric identification programme. It assigns a 12-digit unique identification number to every resident of India.
UIDAI operates under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.

Legal Framework
Aadhaar Act, 2016
The Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016 is the primary legislation governing UIDAI and the Aadhaar system.
Privacy & Data Protection
Biometric data is never shared. Demographic data shared only with consent. All data is encrypted and stored on secure UIDAI servers in India.
eKYC API Licensing
Organisations must obtain AUA/KUA licensing from UIDAI to use Aadhaar for authentication or eKYC. Contact collaborate@uidai.net.in to apply.
